Carnivorous Plants of the World
The public is invited to a 45 minute talk about the most
spectacular and striking carnivorous plants from across the world. In this
spectacular presentation the phenomenon of plant carnivory is traced from its
discovery in the 19th century to the latest discoveries from across the globe
- including giant newly discovered pitcher plants in the Philippines and
Borneo, to the carnivorous flora of the 'lost worlds' Tepuis (table-top
mountains found in the Guiana Highlands of South America), to the snapping
jaws of the Venus flytrap and bladderworts of North America. See little known
and rare carnivorous plant species in the wild, and hear how the plants you
grow and collect survive in the wild and use their incredible leaf traps to
kill and hunt animal prey! The concluding note is one of conservation, with
the future of carnivorous plants of the world outlined, and how you can get
involved to help protect Planet Earth's most incredible plant life. The
speaker, Stewart McPherson, a British naturalist, has written four books
examining the carnivorous plants of the world. Over the past six years, he has
traveled extensively across South America and South East Asia to study and
photograph carnivorous plants on more than one hundred remote mountain peaks.
During his travels, he has passed through unexplored rainforests in New
Guinea, mine fields in Cambodia, and unclimbed peaks in the Philippines, all
in search of these plants. Recently, he has discovered and named several new
species of carnivorous plants, including two of the largest “pitcher plants”
yet found (N. attenboroughii and N. palawanensis). Stewart is traveling to
Virginia to support the important and valuable work of Meadowview Biological
Research Station, and assist in raising funds to protect habitat of native
carnivorous plants. The talk will be held at the University of Mary
Washington in Fredericksburg, VA on May 1 at 4:00 P.M. at Jepson 100
lecture hall. Sponsored by the UMW Department of Biological Sciences and
Meadowview Biological Research Station 8390 Fredericksburg Turnpike, Woodford,
VA 22580.
