As an incentive to become a Meadowview sponsor, we are offering a 50% discount on our plants when you become a sponsor with an annual donation of $25.00 or more. This entitles you to excellent prices on our plants while at the same time supporting our conservation and restoration efforts.

We offer a number of interesting bog plants for sale at Meadowview Biological Research Station. All plants are from propagated material. If there are plants you are interested in but do not see in our catalog please ask us. We have limited quantities of many species which are not listed in this catalog available to those involved in ecological restoration. We have propagated pitcher plant populations of varieties found from Virginia to Texas, which you may be interested in using for your restoration project, depending upon the geographic area. Please inquire as to location and availability of those plants. Feel free to visit our facility by appointment, where you may make your own selections from our stock.

Unlike other companies, we ship only mature plants to ensure the highest quality plants and a satisfied customer.  We suggest ordering in late winter before plants have started growth to get both the best plants we have available and to ensure that plants have a full season of growth.  When orders are placed during the growing season we cut-off any open pitchers during preparation of the order to avoid potentially shipping unwanted insects around the country.  Plants are washed and bare-rooted, wrapped in moist paper towel, placed in Ziploc bags, and shipped by U.S. Priority Mail.

We Accept PayPal (the safe way to use credit cards on the web), checks or money orders.

SARRACENIA  (Pitcher Plants) - pitfall traps:

This genus was named in honor of Dr. Sarrazin by the botanist Tournefort. Pitcher plants are our favorite because of their large, showy, and colorful flowers and leaves. Insects fall or get caught in the recesses of the funnel shaped traps and are used by the plants as a source of nutrients for growth. Easily grown outside in a bog garden in full sun they are always a topic of conversation while the flowers and leaves can be dried to make attractive arrangements.

We offer both species and hybrids. Although there are a variety of mechanisms for maintaining the identity of the various species, occasionally they cross in the wild and produce offspring.  Large natural hybrid swarms are known to exist but usually hybrids occur as scattered individuals in disturbed habitats. We encourage you to try growing the species as well as the hybrids.

Species
S. alata, the Texas Trumpet!! This is the only pitcher plant species found west of the Mississippi with most of the range in Louisiana and Texas. The species is winter hardy in the mid-Atlantic states and produces attractive, faintly lemon-scented, cream to yellow flowers in May. Leaves are a golden yellow with subtle reddish-purple veining inside the pitcher. Especially attractive in large clumps.

$15.00

S. alata 'areolata' – within the Texas and Louisiana populations of S. alata rare individuals possess faint windows similar to those found in S. alabamensis. Although the windows are not the same as in S. leucophylla they may reflect an evolutionary trend within the genus Sarracenia to develop light patches for insect captures. Read more about this in our article “What is the identity of the West Gulf Coast Pitcher Plant, Sarracenia alata Wood?” Plants are available starting June 2003.

S. flava, the Yellow Pitcher Plant. This large, attractive, pitcher plant is one of the most impressive pitcher plants in spring (leaves up to 4 feet tall). The attractive, sulfur yellow flowers appear in late April-May and are followed by production of the robust foliage. We cultivate several varieties which will be available for purchase starting in June 2000.
Typica - characterized by a distinctive purple blotch restricted to the throat

$40.00

Carolina Coastal - the pitchers are an overall beautiful yellow-green.

$30.00

Veined- reddish purple pigmentation radiates throughout the veins of the plant.

HYBRIDS/CULTIVARS
Most hybrids offered are of an upright or trumpet shape but a few tend to be decumbent or low to the ground (indicated by "d").  We offer a number of outstanding hybrids developed decades ago by several renowned growers. Fred Case is well known for his books on orchids and trilliums, as well as his several papers on Sarracenia which led to him naming a new species, Sarracenia alabamensis ssp. alabamensis (now endangered). Bob Hanrahan is one of the originators of large scale horticultural propagation of pitcher plants. We purchased our plants from Bob's company World Insectivorous Plants, more than twenty years ago. Bill Scholl and Phil Sheridan are members of Meadowview and have been deeply committed to Sarracenia conservation.

THE NEW WORLD

This selection of cultivars is a celebration of the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown in 1607.   These plants are meant to honor the prominent native Americans and colonists because of their outstanding beauty and rarity.

The Native American Series (limited quantity)

   S. flava 'Pocahontas'

This striking plant is our first release of a rare native Virginia yellow pitcher plant from Sussex County.  “Pocahontas” is characterized by tall, graceful pitchers which expand rapidly in the upper portion of the pitcher much like an elegant wine glass.  Beautiful purple veins radiate throughout the leaf with an intense splotch in the throat.  An additional trait of “Pocahontas” is the presence of purple suffusing the rim of the pitcher mouth.

Pocahontas was the favorite daughter of chief Powhatan.  She is famed for saving the life of Captain John Smith by placing her head on his and preventing him from being executed.  Pocahontas brought peace between the colonists and native Americans when she married the Englishmen John Rolfe.  Pocahontas had a son with John Rolfe, traveled to England and met the royals, and unfortunately fell ill and died as she was preparing to return home to Virginia.

We honor the grace, charm, playfulness, and contribution to peace of Pocahontas with our most beautiful native Virginia yellow pitcher plant.

This bold, solid red clone reflects the power and pride of chief Powhatan. The flower is solid yellow, typical of normal yellow pitcher plant. The red color of the foliage is best developed under intense, sunny conditions.

Powhatan was the ruler of the Algonquin tribe that occupied central Virginia when the colonists arrived in 1607.

'Matoaka'

'Matoaka' means “little snow feather” and was the name commonly used by Pocahontas (Pocahontas was a private name rarely used in public). This beautiful cross of S. leucophylla and S. rubra wherryi has a soft pubescence covering the exterior of the pitcher. The upper portion of the leaf is speckled with small white windows interwoven with purple veins.

  Sarracenia  'John Smith

'John Smith'

'John Smith' is a cross of native Virginia yellow and purple pitcher plant. What is unique about 'John Smith' is the reverse pattern of veining in the hood and the almost stipled pattern. The leaf is golden yellow integrated with shades of blush. John Smith was the colorful captain of the colonists and wrote several narratives of the original settlement and encounters with the native Americans.

NEPENTHES, THE ASIAN PITCHER PLANT

The genus Nepenthes is a tropical vine that produces pitchers at the ends of the leaf.  Typically Nepenthes requires much less light than Sarracenia and hence is a much better plant for a terrarium, a sunny southern window, a veranda in summer, or a hothouse.  If you set-up a terrarium you might consider adding in some of the tropical bladderworts and sundews for additional interest.
