West Virginia

Cranberry Glades

  Big Run Bog:

Site Description: Big Run Bog is a multi-hectare open fen in Monongahela
National Forest. The peatland is located near the town of Davis in
Tucker County, West Virginia. This large peatland contains an
exceptional colony of several thousand purple pitcher plant, Sarracenia
purpurea. Although S. purpurea is not documented as a native species in
West Virginia the plants at Big Run were planted as part of a rescue
operation from dam construction in the 1930's.

Big Run Bog contains a series of beaver maintained grassy meadows, open
pools, and spring-fed, sphagnous side slopes. American cranberry, cotton
grass, and round-leaved sundew are found abundantly at the site.
